Description
Campaign Story
LIV Lanseria runs nine strategic programmes that work both internally and externally with our local community. We believe we cannot be an island of privilege in a sea of poverty. We therefore have formed relationships with communities to support them as well as to sponsor a village with children in the care of sponsored foster care parents.
In total, we assist 2500 children per day with educational support and healthy meals.
This application highlights two programmes which are severely affected by COVID-19.
Kids Club
Every Saturday LIV Lanseria hosts a program that brings children of LIV Lanseria and the Joe Slovo community together for a morning of fun. We have various activities that we organize to ensure that the day is packed with fun and laughter. We service on average 150 children at a kids club, plus 30 youth helpers who have been mentored as leaders to help facilitate and execute the programme. Many of these children receive a meal at school on a Friday and need to wait until the Monday before receiving the next proper meal at school, which we provide. We feel that it is important to include a big nutritious meal as part of the programme, so that we send these children home with a full belly (and at time a portion large enough to share with other members in their family).
Holiday Club
Holiday Club Program runs during the Government school holidays from 8:30 – 15:30 for the leaders and 9:30 – 14:00 for the children. The day is pre-planned and packed with activities for all ages, including: – Games, arts and crafts, sports, Bible lessons, acting and dance sessions and much more – supplemented with a small but nutritious lunch meal and a teatime snack.
The programme is designed by our youth leaders within a formal and educational framework. They choose the theme, activities, roles and responsibilities. This programme helps keep children safe from the community where they would otherwise have no supervision or structured activities.
COVID-19 Impact:
Many of the families in the community are wage workers and are without a source of income during the LOCKDOWN period, which has significantly affected our ability to provide the children with a meal.
As a result of constraints imposed on group sizes (Max 100) and social distancing (1m) – we have had to cancel both Holiday and Kid’s Club Programmes. There is no safe alternative for the children in these areas regarding collective supervision other than to partner with an institution that can provide wellness support.
To this end DOGOOD have approached HeadStart Kids, who are willing to provide nourishment and wellness interventions through their accredited HeadStart Kids Program as support to the children of these communities during this COVID-19 Crisis.
